Howard W. Makofsky has trained in both physical therapy and massage therapy with over forty years of clinical experience, including the establishment of the TMJ and headache centers at the Southside Health Institute on Long Island, NY in the 1980’s. Dr. Makofsky’s professional training includes a BSc in human physiology from McGill University; an undergraduate degree (BS) and graduate degree (MS) in physical therapy and health sciences, respectively, at the State University of New York at Stony Brook; doctoral work at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences (DHSc), and Diploma studies in massage therapy at the Northumberland College in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Dr. Makofsky has published over twenty scientific articles – most of which were in peer-reviewed journals – plus two editions of the textbook, Spinal Manual Therapy. In addition, he is the holder of two patents in the United States Patent & Trademark Office (i.e., the Occivator and PostureJac). Prior to moving to Canada in 2012, Dr. Makofsky was an Adjunct Professor at Touro College for twenty-five years and an Associate Professor at the New York Institute of Technology for thirteen. Howard also served on the editorial boards for CRANIO: The Journal of Craniomandibular and Sleep Practice and the Journal of Manual & Manipulative Therapy for several years.
Howard and his wife Frances are the proud parents of four adult children and grandparents of twelve amazing grandchildren. Howard and Frances currently live in Advocate Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada, where Howard maintains a small home-based manual therapy and bodywork practice and Frances operates a thrift store out of their barn, engages in gardening and food preservation (e.g., pickling), and writing. In addition, Howard and Frances are the founders and directors of Kaya’s Kids, Inc. a 501(c)(3) U.S. nonprofit, which is the primary fundraiser for the Paradise Orphanage & Schools in Burkina Faso, West Africa.
